The summer interns have embarked on their journey with The Wall Street Journal.
This group of 26 journalists will be working for 10 weeks across all of our platforms, including print, wires, WSJ.com, audio, video, photo, graphics and social media. They will be working remotely or in person, working from bureaus across the U.S., as well as London, Brussels, Paris, Seoul, Beijing and Singapore.
Alex Harring (Corporate, New York)
Alex Harring is a recent graduate of the University of Michigan, where he studied English and political science. He worked for four years at The Michigan Daily, most recently leading the Culture, Training and Inclusion team, and as a news editor and reporter before that. Alex previously interned at CNN, CNBC and The Detroit News, and he spent the spring at NBC News in the Business, Technology and Innovation Unit. Originally from Metro Detroit, Alex enjoys movies, TV and reading Refinery29’s Money Diaries in his free time.
Angela Yang (Careers & Workplace)
Angela is a rising senior at Boston University studying journalism and international relations. She was editor-in-chief of BU’s independent newspaper The Daily Free Press. Most recently, she was a digital reporting intern for NBC News. She previously worked as a business correspondent for The Boston Globe and a radio production assistant for GBH, Boston’s local NPR station. She was also a fact checker for America’s Test Kitchen’s Webby Award-winning podcast “Proof,” and her work has appeared in Poynter, CBS Boston and more. Aside from storytelling, Angela is passionate about making the journalism industry more accessible to those from underrepresented socioeconomic backgrounds.
Ariana Aspuru (Podcast)
Ariana Aspuru is a recent graduate of the University of Florida with a degree in journalism and minors in innovation and anthropology. Previously, she interned as a crime and environment reporter with The Miami Herald and as a production intern with Weekend All Things Considered at NPR. In her undergraduate career, she served as an editor at her college newspaper and helped start a weekly podcast at her local student NPR station, WUFT News. A Miami native, Ariana enjoys taking her dogs to the beach, crocheting and finding a new podcast to obsess over.
Ayse Kelce (Personal Finance)
Ayse Kelce, a Dow Jones News Fund business reporting intern, is Turkish and Ukrainian and grew up in Istanbul, Turkey. Ayse recently graduated from Baruch College of the City University of New York (CUNY), where she focused on business journalism and political science. She most recently interned for Mansion Global, covering real estate, and she was the managing editor of Baruch’s student newspaper, The Ticker, where she previously worked as the business editor and copy chief. Ayse also interned for Politics NY and Hurriyet, covering a wide range of topics including local politics, education and health. When she is not writing articles, she can be found sipping coffee at a park accompanied by friends, a poetry book, or her mom over FaceTime.
Briana Ellis-Gibbs (Photo Editing)
Briana Ellis-Gibbs, from Queens, New York, is a graduate student at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, and obtained her Bachelor’s degree from Howard University. Briana serves as her grad school’s student council president and works as an assistant in the school’s photo department. Before grad school, Briana was an intern for photographer Jesse Dittmer and worked as a photo production assistant for Essence magazine. She loves black and white photographs. If she is not looking through photo archives, you can find her at a used bookstore surfing through used fiction and photo books or listening to music in Washington Square Park.
Claire Lim (Singapore)
Claire Lim is a rising senior at Bates College studying politics and environmental studies. She is excited to integrate data into storytelling, and is eager to learn how politics informs business activity and vice versa. In her free time, she likes reading contemporary fiction, curating Spotify playlists, and exploring the nature (and food) that New England has to offer.
Connor Hart (Real-Time)
Connor Hart is a graduate of the University of South Carolina. Throughout his college career, he has worked at The Daily Gamecock, UofSC’s student newspaper, as a writer and managing editor, and has interned at The State newspaper covering local business. Outside of work, Connor was a senior captain of the UoSC’s men’s club volleyball team, and in his free time he is likely playing volleyball or exploring the outdoors.
Corinne Dorsey (WSJ. Magazine)
Corinne Dorsey is a Washington, D.C.-based writer and rising senior at Howard University. She is a freelance writer for TheGrio and Bold Culture, and has previously interned at the TODAY Show at NBC News, The Dallas Morning News and at CNN’s D.C. Bureau. She is also a 2022 White House Correspondents’ Association Scholar. On-campus, Corinne is the Editor-in-Chief for Revolutionaire and Vice President for Howard’s Her Campus Magazine. Her work focuses on black womanhood, social issues, fashion, and culture. She is passionate about storytelling through writing, photography, and social media. She enjoys traveling, practicing yoga, and trying new restaurants in her free time.
Elissa Miolene (London)
Elissa Miolene is the Daniel Pearl Memorial Journalism Intern who will be working with the World News team in London. She recently completed her master’s degree in journalism at Stanford University. Her work has appeared in the San Jose Mercury News, SF Gate, AP News, Washingtonian Magazine, and more. Before heading back to school, she led communications at various humanitarian and UN agencies in New York, Kampala, Male, and Kigali. In her free time, Elissa can be found binging a podcast, planning her next trip, and, as of late, exercising her new drone license.
Hakyung Kim (Seoul)
Hakyung Kim is a 2022 Overseas Press Club Fellow. She is a recent graduate of NYU’s Stern School of Business, where she studied Econometrics & Quantitative Economics and minored in Chinese. She previously interned at NPR’s bureau in Seoul, Korea and was an AAJA Voices Fellow and Vox Media Writer’s Workshop Fellow last summer. Hakyung was born in Seoul and is interested in becoming a foreign correspondent and covering the intersection of macro-level issues and lived experiences. Hakyung speaks English, Korean, and is learning Mandarin Chinese. In her free time, she enjoys baking pastries, birdwatching, and listening to live music.
Isabelle Sarraf (Education)
Isabelle Sarraf is a recent graduate of Northwestern University, where she studied journalism and political science. A New York native, she served as the editor-in-chief of her college paper, The Daily Northwestern. She’s previously held internships with Bloomberg Industry Group, the Chicago Sun-Times and Backstage. In her free time, you can find her listening to podcasts, watching period dramas and taking walks along the Long Island Sound.
Jacob Ohara (Video Editing)
Jacob Ohara is a recent graduate from Northwestern University, where he studied journalism, computer science and design. He has covered his home state of California with the nonprofit newsroom, CalMatters, and is a fellow at The Emma Bowen Foundation. Most recently, Jacob interned with Forbes and The Texas Tribune, where he produced explainer videos and mini-docs. In addition to videography, Jacob loves public transit, ramen and The Golden State Warriors.
José Luis Martínez (Data Reporting/Investigations)
José Luis Martínez recently graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. A Houston native, José was a data visuals fellow at The Texas Tribune and a data reporting intern at American Public Media’s investigative unit — APM Reports. Before that, he was an Emerging Reporter Fellow with ProPublica, hosted a podcast for Central American News, and worked at the Voces Oral History Center and the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas. He has freelanced for El Faro English and Latin America News Dispatch, where he reported on the undocumented immigrant community. Besides diving into data, he loves to play ping pong and dance to cumbias.
Lauryn Azu (Speed and Trending)
Lauryn Azu is a recent graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Journalism and Mass Communication who believes that reporting helped her grow into herself as a thinker and writer. In college, she held internships at the Chicago Tribune as a Dow Jones News Fund multiplatform editing intern and at the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism. In her senior year, she served as the editor-in-chief of The Black Voice at UW-Madison. She is a proud recipient of a National Association of Black Journalists 2021 Salute to Excellence Award.
Lucy Papachristou (Brussels)
Lucy Papachristou is a current master’s candidate in journalism at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY. A New York native, she got her start as a reporter at the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project in Sarajevo, where she learned about kickbacks and hiked in the mountains on the weekends. She’s managed clothing warehouses for refugees in Greece, written about hurricanes in coastal North Carolina, and reported on migration from small towns in northwest Bosnia. In Brussels, Lucy is excited to learn how the European Union works inside and out. In her free time, she likes to read poetry in Russian and ride the Q train to Coney Island.
Maddie Ellis (Personal Tech)
Maddie Ellis, of Charlotte, N.C. is a recent graduate from the University of North Carolina’s Hussman School of Journalism and Media, where she majored in journalism. This spring, Maddie was a digital editorial intern with TODAY, where she wrote about trending news, pop culture and lifestyle. Before that she was an intern for the Charlotte Observer, where she wrote for CharlotteFive, its lifestyle and entertainment section. At UNC, she worked for The Daily Tar Heel as the university desk editor and enterprise director. In her free time, she loves to re-watch “When Harry Met Sally” and find new memoirs to read.
Michelle Ailport (Audience Engagement)
Michelle Ailport is a graduate of the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University. She has interned at the Arizona Republic, USA TODAY, Arizona PBS and the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office, and she has contributed to the Phoenix New Times. She previously served as executive and arts editors of Downtown Devil, a hyperlocal, student-run publication.
Nelly Ontiveros (Digital Platform)
Nelly Ontiveros, a Dow Jones News Fund digital intern, is a recent graduate of the University of Central Florida, where she majored in journalism and minoring in history. She previously served as a digital producer for the Orlando Sentinel, where she worked behind the scenes editing the homepage and distributing news across social platforms. She interned at 90.7 WMFE, Central Florida’s NPR News station, covering space and co-producing “Are We There Yet?’’ a weekly space-exploration podcast. She also wrote for the Orlando Weekly, covering local businesses and community news. Born and raised in Venezuela, Nelly enjoys reading history books, listening to her favorite podcasts and visiting local coffee shops.
Pia Singh (Markets)
Pia Singh is a rising senior at the University of Pennsylvania pursuing a degree in Communication. She serves as the Executive Editor of The Daily Pennsylvanian, Inc., overseeing editorial operations and staff of three, independent student-run publications: university newspaper The Daily Pennsylvanian, arts and culture 34th Street Magazine, and satire publication Under The Button. Pia was previously a News Editor and award-winning politics beat reporter for the DP, and has interned with CNBC.com and Philadelphia Magazine. Outside of the newsroom, she loves to paint and travel with friends and family.
Rebecca Picciotto (Real Estate)
Rebecca Picciotto is a recent graduate of Amherst College where she studied philosophy and mathematics. She spent the summer of 2021 at The Bergen Record in her home state of New Jersey, covering topics ranging from housing to education to politics. At Amherst, she served as editor-in-chief of The Amherst Student where she launched the podcast department and started a program to offer paid newspaper positions. Her coverage at The Student included local housing dynamics, student activism, and more. She has also interned at Morning Brew. Outside the newsroom, Rebecca can be found running, hiking, or drawing.
Rina Torchinsky (Economics)
Rina Torchinsky, a Dow Jones News Fund business reporting intern, grew up in the Washington, D.C. area and is a senior at the University of Maryland. She’s on track to graduate in December with degrees in journalism and information science. Rina has spent much of her college career invested in The Diamondback, the independent student newspaper. Outside of the college paper, she has worked for NPR, The Allentown Morning Call, AccuWeather and the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism. In her free time, Rina likes to play basketball, go for long walks, tie-dye and tend to her indoor plants.
Sara Ruberg (London)
Sara Ruberg, the Marie Colvin Reporting Fellow, is a recent graduate from Stony Brook University’s School of Communication and Journalism. During her time at Stony Brook, Sara served as the multimedia editor and later as the editor-in-chief of her campus newspaper, The Statesman. In the spring, she interned at the network desk of NBC News where she assisted with breaking and ongoing news while reporting on her own enterprise stories. She has also previously interned at WSHU Public Radio, Cedar Production and the Adirondack Explorer Magazine. In her free time, Sara enjoys trying new cuisines, hiking and karaoke with friends.
Sarah Donaldson (Technology)
Sarah Donaldson is a recent graduate of Ohio University, where she studied journalism, political science and social media. As a student, most of her time was dedicated to the WOUB Public Media and The New Political student newsrooms. She also worked as an intern on the White House and Congress beat at ABC News Washington during fall 2021 and was a business desk intern at The Columbus Dispatch during summer 2021. She is originally from north of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and when she isn’t on deadline, she enjoys hiking, hammocking and reading.
Teresa Mettela (Politics)
Teresa Mettela returns to intern for a second time with the politics team in Washington, D.C., after doing a stint in the spring. She recently graduated from The City College of New York, after studying journalism and international studies. She worked as a local journalist for the Queens Daily Eagle and the Queens Courier. In her free time, she likes to write poetry, practice yoga, and skateboard around New York City.
Xueshan Zhao (Beijing)
Xueshan Zhao is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in communications at the Communication University of China and a dual degree in journalism at the University of Missouri. Previously, she was an intern at Variety China and Caijing Magazine. She also assisted companies on their communications strategy during an internship at Finsbury Glover Hering. She is curious about how culture, economy and politics impact communities. When she is not working, you can find Xueshan at the China Film Archive in Beijing.
Yuriko Schumacher (Graphics)
Yuriko Schumacher is a recent graduate of Northeastern University where she earned a master’s degree in journalism. She is originally from Japan and used to work at The Asahi Shimbun, a Japanese national newspaper, covering the police beat, before she pivoted to focus on data visualization and graphics. Her recent work has appeared in the cover story of the Boston Globe Magazine and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel where she worked as a data reporting intern. In her free time, she enjoys exploring new restaurants, practicing hot yoga, and playing online video games.
