Michael Miller writes for PCMag about legendary technology journalist John C. Dvorak, who died last week at 80 and was edited by Miller.
Miller writes, “After I joined PC Magazine in 1991, I got to know John a lot better. He wrote two columns for the magazine: a main essay column under his name and Inside Track. Each appeared 22 times annually for many years. John enjoyed being provocative and controversial, and was never afraid to buck industry trends or speak negatively about the industry’s movers and shakers.
“John was a reader favorite, and they were happy to share their thoughts on his musings. But he wasn’t always a favorite of the staffers who had to edit his columns; he was often late and sometimes wrote essays that were too long or too short. (Yes, kids, in those print days, everything had to fit a specific length.) Still, the readers loved him.
“We spent a lot of time together on my trips to the Bay Area, sometimes with other industry figures. John knew all the best restaurants and considered himself a wine connoisseur, which he was very free in ordering on the company expense account.”
