What’s behind the strategy of TheStreet.com magazine

Bron Maher of A Media Operator writes about the launch of a print magazine by TheStreet.com.

Maher writes, “The first edition of TheStreet’s magazine, centered on investing legend Warren Buffett, is pitched as a taster for people who might enjoy the site but aren’t yet familiar with the brand.

“O’Neill said Buffett was the ‘Trojan horse to get [people] in the door.’

“The edition represents ‘a good cross-section of who we are as TheStreet,’ he said, containing ‘introductory investing content’ and ‘really wonky, sophisticated investing content,’ the latter of which he said was ‘not going to be for everyone, so it’s very limited, because you’re going to have to be a pretty savvy investor to really understand some of the charts and graphs.’

“Buffett-related stories make up about a third of the content (although the team failed to secure an interview with the man himself), with the rest a mix of classic TheStreet content like economic indicators and indexes, features on retail and tech and travel writing. The mag does not contain third-party ads, but does advertise TheStreet Pro and other Arena properties like Men’s Journal and Athlon Sports.

“The company does not disclose how many people subscribe to TheStreet Pro. Arena’s annual report for 2024 does disclose that its finance segment (of which TheStreet is the only part) generated $7.8 million in digital subscription revenue: Given the cheapest Pro subscription is $600 for a year, that would imply around 13,000 subscribers.”
