
Jerry Underwood, a business reporter and business editor at the Birmingham News for more than two decades, died Sunday at the age of 65.
Underwood was a business reporter from 1990 to 1998 for the News. He led coverage on many significant and complex stories, including Mercedes-Benz’s selection of Alabama for its first U.S. auto plant and the corporate buyouts of Bruno’s Supermarkets Inc. and others.
He was business editor from 1998 to 2012. Underwood supervised five reporters and an assistant business editor and also wrote a Sunday column.
Before the News, he was a reporter for the Daily Mountain Eagle. After the news, he worked for the Big Communications public relations firm, primarily on the Alabama Department of Commerce account.
Underwood held degrees from Auburn University and the University of Alabama.
