Charlotte Howard, previously The Economist’s executive editor, has been named U.S. editor, overseeing coverage of America, becoming the first American to hold the position.

Howard is based in New York, where she will continue to serve as bureau chief and co-host of “The Economist’s Checks and Balance” podcast.

John Prideaux will conclude his decade-long tenure as U.S. editor on June 15 and take over as executive editor.

Charlotte is the rare journalist with both a deep knowledge of American business as well as politics,” said Zanny Minton Beddoes, editor-in-chief of The Economist, in a statement.
