Smallest daily newspaper with a standalone print section

dMost metropolitan daily newspapers expanded their print sections to include a business news section in the 1980s, following in the footsteps of the New York Times, which created the first standalone business news section in 1978.

But in the first decade of the 21st century, virtually all of them cut that standalone business news section, putting business news in the back of the A section or somewhere else. Even the Times cut its standalone business news section.

The Post and Courier in Charleston, South Carolina, however, has kept its standalone business section even though its print circulation is now less than 50,000 — down from close to 100,000 about 15 years ago — and it has stopped printing on Monday and Tuesday. Talking Biz News believes it’s the smallest circulation newspaper that has kept a standalone business section.

The paper put its sports section behind business and classified ads in the print edition. Most other metro dailies have kept a standalone sports section.

In 2020, the Post and Courier expanded its Sunday business section.
