The Canadian chapter of the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing (SABEW) announced the winners of the ninth annual Best In Business Awards on Tuesday night at an event in Toronto.
The Globe and Mail led all outlets, winning five gold medals and four silvers. Bloomberg News was honored with three golds and one silver, while the Toronto Star earned two gold medals, the Financial Post earned one gold and one silver medal and The Logic earned five silver medals.
Other winners included The Canadian Press, CBC News, CoStar News, Canadian Business and MoneySense.
The Globe and Mail’s David Milstead won gold twice—in the Commentary category for his columns and as part of a group entry in the Breaking News category for reporting on Scotiabank’s succession drama.
Bloomberg News’ Natalie Obiko Pearson was honored with a gold medal for her investigation into racism at international schools and a silver as part of a group entry in the Feature (Long-Form) category for a look at what happens to recycled clothing. Jake Edmiston of the Financial Post earned gold for his short feature charting a green grape’s journey through the global supply chain, and silver in the Beat Reporting category for his coverage of the business of food.
Rosa Saba of The Canadian Press was named Jeff Sanford Best Young Journalist. The award is named after Financial Post and Canadian Business journalist Jeff Sanford, who died in 2018. It is generously supported by Sanford’s family.
Garry Marr earned the Outstanding Achievement award, recognizing his long career as an influential figure in Canadian financial journalism, which continues in his role as chief Canada correspondent for CoStar News, published by the world’s biggest provider of commercial real estate data.
SABEW Canada’s Best in Business Awards are the only Canadian journalism awards dedicated exclusively to recognizing exemplary works of business journalism. The ninth annual edition honored work published in the 2022 calendar year.
The awards are made possible thanks to the generous support of Fidelity Investments Canada and Ivey Publishing.
