Richmond Times-Dispatch biz editor Gilligan departing

Gregory Gilligan

Greg Gilligan, the longtime business editor of the Richmond Times-Dispatch, is leaving the newspaper after 35 years.

His last day will be March 18.

On LinkedIn, he writes, “I figured I’d be here a couple of years. But Richmond grew on me….and in 1993 I got my dream job covering the retail industry on the business desk, a job that gave me a front-row seat to some big stories – the rise and fall of Circuit City, Best Products and Heilig-Meyers as well as the growth of CarMax and the region’s entrepreneurial community. I had the chance to write some fun stories – like working as a clerk during the holidays at different retailers to give readers an idea of what those unheralded jobs entail. I also wrote the Biz Buzz column in Monday’s Metro Business over the years.

“I have received awards from the Virginia Press Association, including first place in the business writing category in 2021.

“I have proudly occupied the seat as the RTD business editor for the past 11 ½ years.

“As I turn the page on this long chapter of my professional life, I’m excited to begin a new one. I become the communications director of RVA757 Connects, an organization that promotes economic development in the mega-region extending from Richmond to Hampton Roads, I look forward to new challenges and an opportunity to make a difference.”
