Reuters editor-in-chief Alessandra Galloni shared the following message with Reuters colleagues Wednesday:
Dear colleagues,
I am writing to share with you the news that John Pullman, Global Managing Editor, Visuals, has decided to leave Reuters with effect from December 31, 2023.
John has been a transformational editor at Reuters, where he has created and led one of the most advanced and commercially-successful visual teams in the media world.
A longtime video editor and manager, John conceived our One Visuals strategy, bringing together our video and photos teams and rolling out extensive training for both photographers and video journalists in order to strengthen their capacity to work across mediums and cover breaking news stories around the world.
John also created our first user generated content (UGC) team, a unit that is now instrumental in much of our world coverage. The UGC team has grown into a global unit that works 24/7, finding and verifying essential news video and photos.
During his tenure, Reuters has won many awards including five photo Pulitzers and two Royal Television Society video awards.
John began his career as a trainee reporter at the Birmingham Post before moving into television news initially as a reporter in Yorkshire, England. He held a number of senior editorial positions at ITN, and in 2005 moved to Qatar as one of the founders of the Al Jazeera English news channel.
He joined Reuters in 2010, initially to run the live video operation. He became the global editor for video in 2012, brought the photo and video operations together in 2014, and took over responsibility for sports, lifestyle, and entertainment in 2015.
“John understood, way before it was fashionable, the importance of visual journalism: not only to our large broadcast clients, but to newspapers and digital customers eager to engage new audiences, said” Sue Brooks, Head of Agency. “His extraordinary prescience combined with customer knowledge and industry insight will be greatly missed.”
John is a very popular colleague inside Reuters and a deeply respected executive in the broadcasting and video world.
I will miss his deep expertise, commercial savvy and his thoughtfulness towards colleagues and within the leadership team. John will be here until the end of the year – and promises he won’t go far in January – so we will have plenty of opportunity to fete his career here and wish him well in his new endeavors.
Please join me in wishing John all the very best.
