Russell Sherman of the “Press Profiles” podcast interviewed Alessandra Galloni, the editor in chief of Reuters, about her career.

Galloni previously worked at The Wall Street Journal, as well as the Associated Press and Reuters, covering economic indicators for the local language service in Italy.

She joined The Journal in 2001 after covering a British car company being purchased by a private equity firm. “I was getting scoops, so I was being noticed by the London bureau chief,” she said. “That is what got me noticed.”

She stayed at The Journal for 12 years before returning to Reuters. She credits her time at The Journal for improving her storytelling and nurturing of sources.

Galloni became the first female Reuters editor in chief when she was appointed in 2021. She leads 2,500 journalists and 600 photojournalists in 200 locations across the globe, and it has 100 million monthly readers.

“There is always something happening somewhere around the world,” said Galloni. “And there is always someone getting a great scoop.”

She said that no story is worth a life, noting that three Reuters journalists have died in the past decade. Galloni makes the final decision on whether to send a staff member into what the news organization calls a “red” assignment.

“The courage of our journalists everywhere is incredible,” she said.
