Rest of World has hired Durga Sengupta as its South Asia editor.
Sengupta was previously the Southeast Asia Desk Editor for The Ken, where she worked for nearly five years. During that time, she worked closely with reporters across the organization to sharpen their pitches; to ideate, edit, and put out deeply reported long-form and investigative stories. Last year, she was also a part of a Google News Initiative cohort for Newsroom Leadership at the Columbia School of Journalism.
She has worked with a number of Indian media organizations such as the Hindustan Times and Catch News in her decade-long career. Although the majority of her work has focused on tech and business journalism, she’s also dabbled in gender, culture, and politics reporting — beats that remain close to her heart.
Sengupta will head the South Asia desk, covering critical subjects such as tech labor, e-commerce, and social media platforms.
