Clea Benson, managing editor of policy news at Politico, sent out the following to the staff:
We are thrilled to announce that Erin Schumaker is joining POLITICO’s health care team to contribute to our expanding coverage of the future of health care as we chronicle how the pandemic has reshaped medicine. Erin will be returning to beat reporting after serving, most recently, as Insider’s science editor, where her team covered space, climate, extreme weather and discoveries. Prior to that, she spent a decade as a health reporter. She covered the Covid-19 pandemic for ABC News, analyzing data to expose trends driving infections and reporting on the struggles of safety-net hospitals. She was also an enterprise reporter at HuffPost, where she covered the opioid crisis and gun violence as public health challenges.
Erin holds a master’s degree from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism and a bachelor’s degree from Union College. Outside of work, you can find her playing beach volleyball in Brooklyn, where she lives.
Erin gets started today. Please join us in welcoming her to POLITICO.
