NY Times hires STAT senior news editor Thielking

Megan Thielking

Lori Leibovich, the editor of Well at The New York Times, sent out the following on Thursday:

For months, we’ve been searching for a gifted editor to lead Well’s daily news coverage and work with our reporters to further shape our news strategy. We’ve found that person in Megan Thielking.

Megan is joining us from STAT, the national health and medicine publication, where she has been a senior news editor. Megan joined STAT at its founding as the first writer of its flagship Morning Rounds newsletter, and also worked as a reporter covering mental health, women’s health and science. As an editor at STAT, Megan oversaw the expansion of the site’s technology vertical, and led a team of reporters covering artificial intelligence, reproductive health, business and more. That coverage spurred a Congressional inquiry, has been cited by federal regulators and lawmakers, and led companies to change how they share consumer health data. Also at STAT, Megan launched a video series on the quirks of the human body and steered an annual special project honoring early-career scientists. She has also written about health and science for Vox.

Megan is originally from Mishawaka, Ind.,— home of Adam Driver! — and graduated with a degree in journalism from Northwestern.

Her first day is Sept. 25. Please join us in welcoming her to the desk.
