New York Times executive editor Joe Kahn sent out the following on Tuesday:
We are thrilled to announce that Jodi Rudoren is coming back to The Times.
Jodi will rejoin our newsroom as editorial director of Newsletters, where she will oversee our portfolio of dozens of newsletters that together reach many millions of people every day. This role allows Jodi to bring together her journalistic experience running high-impact coverage with her impressive record as an entrepreneurial leader who knows how to connect with digital audiences.
At The Times, Jodi will oversee The Morning, our flagship newsletter with more than five million daily readers, as well as DealBook, our influential must-read newsletter. In addition, she will partner with the desks, along with just about every department in the newsroom and the Product organization, to sharpen and elevate our wide portfolio of newsletters.
For over 20 years, Jodi was an unstoppable journalist at The Times who was as well regarded for her vivid dispatches as she was for her generosity as a colleague. Jodi was a Metro reporter, an education reporter, Chicago bureau chief, a presidential campaign reporter and Jerusalem bureau chief. She was deputy editor on Metro and International, where she always pushed our journalists to experiment and think bigger and more creatively. She was part of the 2020 Committee, which helped the newsroom develop its digital strategy. Her last role at The Times was leading our audience strategy as an associate managing editor, where she helped modernize Times journalism and deepen our understanding of our readers and their needs.
She left in 2019 to lead the newsroom at the Forward, where she oversaw the newspaper to be a fully digital publication, and to move from subscriptions to a universal access, nonprofit membership model. Over the past five years, the Forward won a record number of awards from the American Jewish Press Association as well as top honors from the Religion News Association. In 2022, Jodi’s weekly column, Looking Forward, won the association’s commentary award and was a Deadline Club finalist.
She will report to Sam Dolnick. Please welcome us in congratulating Jodi on her new role and her return to The Times.
