New York Times business editor Ellen Pollock sent out the following to the staff:

We’re pleased to announce that Christopher Rowland, a masterful veteran of business-related health care coverage, is joining The Times.

In his new post, Chris will be responsible for a vast canvas of the health care industry, which makes up about one-fifth of the nation’s economy. He will have the opportunity to chronicle changes across medical care and the health sector, including how the Trump administration’s policies and cutbacks are affecting all aspects, from urgent clinics to hospitals, nursing homes and hospice. The beat also includes the shifting workplace of doctors and nurses.

He is uniquely suited to cover this terrain, with a deep knowledge of the varying and sometimes competing forces that influence the rising costs of health care and advances in medical care (including A.I.’s growingly pervasive presence).

Chris comes highly recommended by several former top editors of The Washington Post, where he led teams of reporters from 2018 onward. He returned to reporting earlier this year.

“He’s a super professional, thorough, accountability-minded reporter who can write a front-page story in his sleep,” said Sandhya Somashekhar, one of Chris’s former supervisors who is now the domestic policy editor in our Washington bureau. “He has a mastery of health topics and can do politics and financial journalism. He dives into complex topics others might shy away from, and explains them elegantly.”

Before landing at The Post, Chris held a number of leadership positions at The Boston Globe, lastly overseeing its Washington bureau as assistant managing editor and bureau chief for nearly a decade.

Chris has won awards and led coverage over the years. Among the accolades with staff members at The Post was recognition in 2024 for “Memory Inc.,” a standout take on the fatal hazards of poor care and quest for profits in the assisted living and dementia care industry.

Chris’s earlier reporting career included stints at The Brattleboro Reformer in Vermont and The Providence Journal. He holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Arizona.

Chris started this week. Of his new role in our expanded health care pod on the Business desk, Chris wrote: “I am thrilled to be joining BizDay and especially excited about this beat. I love digging into the inner workings of our costly, dysfunctional health care system and hunting down the anecdotes that help explain how it impacts actual patients, in terms of their health and finances.”

Please join us in welcoming him.
