Next in line at the top of the WSJ

Lachlan Cartwright of Breaker reports on who is moving up in Wall Street Journal leadership.

Cartwright reports that Journal deputy editor Charles Forelle has “had informal talks with Ben Smith at Semafor about joining their newsroom. Semafor is currently advertising for a deputy editor

“That leaves Tucker with two big jobs to fill: Beaudette’s position has already been advertised (with the eye-watering salary of $285,000-$335,000), and, Breaker has learned, there is some jockeying already internally for the job. 

“Meantime, one person set to be elevated owing to Forelle and Beaudette’s departures is Executive Editor David Crow, who will be taking on a bigger role at the paper, Breaker has learned. A highly ambitious Brit, Crow joined the Journal from the Financial Times in 2023. At the FT, he climbed the greasy pole from Page One editor to banking editor to U.S. political news editor to U.S. news editor to eventually become Executive Editor before Tucker poached him.

“Crow would join Tucker’s inner circle, which she imported from The Sunday Times, where she was editor. There is Tucker’s loyal gatekeeper, Jo Bull, who joined from across the pond and controls access to Tucker, serving as ‘Senior Manager, Officer of The Editor in Chief.'”
