Julie Kliegman

ProPublica announced the hiring of Julie Kliegman, who joins the newsroom’s copy desk.

With more than a decade of experience, Kliegman has overseen copy operations and editorial standards at a variety of media, including The Ringer, Sports Illustrated and Apple News. They have also written for outlets including The New York Times, The Washington Post and Slate.

As a freelancer, Kliegman wrote “Mind Game: An Inside Look at the Mental Health Playbook of Elite Athletes,” a book that takes a deep look into how elite athletes struggle with and persevere through mental illness. Their forthcoming book is the biography “Finding Renée Richards: The Groundbreaking Story of Tennis’s Trans Pioneer.” They also designed and taught a semester-long undergraduate sports-journalism course at the New School.

“We are thrilled to have Julie join our copy desk,” the assistant managing editor for standards, Diego Sorbara, said. “Their breadth of experience and keen eye for detail make Julie a natural fit for our team.”
