Journalist Billy Jean Louis has launched Miami Affordable Magazine, a nonprofit news organization focused exclusively on affordable housing, homeownership and neighborhood development in Miami.

“We help readers understand the business and financial side of housing, from real estate and development to homeownership, government funding and entrepreneurship,” said Louis. “Our coverage has included practical reporting on how to avoid fake real estate agents and housing scams, where first-time homebuyers can find government assistance, what consumers should know before purchasing a home, and how developers and housing entrepreneurs build their businesses.”

The publication also plans to profile CEOs and business owners, examine the economics behind housing development, and report on the programs and investments shaping Miami’s housing market.

Miami Affordable is a digital-only — website, newsletter and social media — publication that is free. The publication is generating revenue from advertising and sponsorships, grants, individual donations and events.

It will host its first first Affordable Housing Leadership Summit and donor reception on Nov. 10.

“We’re still a young publication, but the goal is to build a sustainable niche newsroom around one of the biggest issues facing Miami,” said Louis, who previously worked for the South Florida Business Journal, Bloomberg Law and Technical.ly.
