Meredith Klein of Meredith and the Media interviewed Alex Konrad, who started Upstarts Media a year ago to cover startups.
Here is an excerpt:
- You’re consistently getting major scoops and exclusives. What’s driving your coverage?
- We set out to try startup storytelling that is both trustworthy and fun. My thesis was that a lot of the most trustworthy storytelling is by the book, short, and not very delightful—especially about early-stage startups.
- On the other side, a lot of the most fun storytelling happening is coming from non-journalistic sources, whether it’s the great work TBPN is doing, or some of these very glossy, beautiful podcasts that are out there.
- I felt like there was a gap in the market for in-depth storytelling about startups as early as inception and then all the way through IPO. Upstarts is trying to curate in-depth, often non-paywalled coverage about those startups that I felt were getting underserved—and it seems like the market has resonated with that.
