Financial Times editor in chief Roula Khalaf spoke with Ben Smith and Maxwell Tani of Semafor on its “Mixed Signals” podcast about the newspaper’s strategy.

“When I think about the FT, I think about it being in the middle of this core global fight…between elitists and populists,” said Smith, noting that the newspaper’s digital subscription costs $50 a month.

Khalaf notes that the FT is primarily a business newspaper, but that it covers business in way that has appeal beyond people in business. “Most people read the FT because they get a global view of business and economics and geopolitics,” she said.

She adds that the newspaper is not just read by elite leaders. “We have expertise, and we share these expertise and we inform, and we explain,” she said.

The FT’s goal is to express the truth, said Khalaf, adding that the paper has always reported without “fear or favor.” She has expanded the paper’s climate coverage, for example, and believes it’s an issue that the business community must face.
