How Inc. editor in chief Hofman is adapting

Mike Hofman

Meredith Klein of Meredith and the Media interviewed Inc. editor in chief Mike Hofman about his job.

Here is an excerpt:

  • As editor in chief at Inc., what’s driving your team’s coverage?
    • We’re interested in what parts of the economy are growing, or not, and what are the trends at play. We’re looking at everything from industries that are on the rise—or that might be new or going through transformation—as well as how AI is driving both technology and non-technology companies.
    • We’re also looking at why people are falling short or struggling on everything from trends in the labor market, to trends in capital allocation, and how financing is going along—to even stories like the trend of people buying back their company that they sold, like Tyler Haney from Outdoor Voices. Those are interesting stories for us.
  • With the ever-changing media landscape, how are you adapting Inc.’s coverage and the work of your journalists to meet the trends and demands?
    • Like many newsrooms, our journalists are truly multiplatform storytellers. They’re working simultaneously on video and audio projects, as well as written stories.
    • The important thing is, “What is the idea?” What is an idea that entrepreneurs would think about and subscribe for, and how can we flesh that out to be really meaningful in terms of the service we provide to our readers?
    • We look at businesses with a critical eye, which is important in this moment, because there’s a lot of opportunity to ask questions. For example, “Is there an AI bubble or not?” Or, “How do we think about things like pay equity and pay disparity?” These are great topics.
