Ignacio Ramirez Moreno of “The Blunt Dollar” podcast spoke with Ted Merz, former Bloomberg News global head of news product, about the news organization’s influence and future.

Merz spent 32 years at Bloomberg.

When Merz started at Bloomberg, the internet was not in use, and information was not widely available about the markets.

“My first job at Bloomberg was to summarize the news in newspapers,” said Merz. Bloomberg went to a newspaper wholesaler at 4 a.m. to look for major stories that the papers had broken to put on the Bloomberg news service.

“Over the next years, the information got faster,” said Merz. “There’s been an evolution where the time gap has gotten smaller and smaller. But people are always looking for an informational advantage… so people can trade off of that.”

He believes that Bloomberg has succeeded by maintaining a culture of providing what financial professionals need to succeed. “It is such an essential element in the ecosystem of finance,” said Merz.
