The Houston Chronicle has named Renae Merle as its new business editor.
A story on its website states, “Merle joins the Chronicle after nearly 25 years at The Washington Post, where she most recently helped oversee national coverage with reporters stationed across the country responding to breaking news and producing ambitious enterprise journalism. In that role, she edited stories exploring a wide range of issues affecting American life, from a middle school’s battle against cellphones to the ‘collective amnesia’ of a small Texas town after the 1998 lynching of a Black man, James Byrd.
“Before moving into newsroom leadership, Merle built a distinguished career as a reporter at The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and The Associated Press. She covered the expansion of the defense industry following the Iraq War, white-collar crime and the collapse of the housing market during the 2008 financial crisis.
“She has also edited award-winning journalism recognized by organizations including the National Association of Black Journalists, the National Press Photographers Association and the Webby Awards.”
