Peter Coy, who has been writing an economics newsletter for the New York Times Opinion section since 2021, will be leaving next month.

The last newsletter will be Feb. 7.

“For most of the last three years he’s published three newsletters a week, on topics ranging widely from Social Security to his necktie collection,” wrote Kathleen Kingsbury, editorial page editor and head of Opinion, in a note to the staff. “In several of his pieces, he sought to answer economics-related questions that were on the minds of readers and consumers, whether about inflation, taxes, congestion pricing, climate change, artificial intelligence or various kinds of insurance.”

Before joining the Times, Coy was the longtime economics editor at Bloomberg BusinessWeek. He joined the magazine in December 1989 as telecommunications editor, then became technology editor in October 1992 and held that position until joining the economics staff.

He came to BusinessWeek from the Associated Press in New York, where he had served as a business news writer since 1985.

Before that, Coy worked as a correspondent in the AP Rochester bureau. He began his career at the AP in 1980 as an editor in the Albany bureau. Prior to that, Coy was a reporter for the Waterbury (Conn.) Republican-American.
