CNBC’s Colarusso on how the news channel operates

Dan Colarusso

Russell Sherman of the “Press Profiles” podcast interviewed CNBC senior vice president of news Dan Colarusso about his job and his career.

Colarusso, who lives in Brooklyn, is typically in the CNBC office in New Jersey before 7 a.m. “I don’t sleep much,” he said. “Rest is for the dead.”

He reads the Financial Times, Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal on his way into the office, but doesn’t pay much attention to what is posted in social media. “We’re constantly adjusting” on what is being covered, he said. “It’s an interesting dynamic.”

An all-hands meeting at 8:15 a.m. discusses coverage for the day, as reporters and anchors make pitches on what news should be focused on. “We make sure we get the most squeeze out of the guests we have,” said Colarusso.

A 2:30 p.m. meeting then focuses on what should be covered the following day. The editorial staff also uses a Teams chat and other software to discuss stories and ideas.

He likes three Cs — characters, conflict and companies — when deciding what stories are important. “If you frame everything through that, it makes business news accessible,” he said.
