Calgary Herald business columnist David Parker has retired at age 88 after more than 25 years of writing about the local business community.
Parker writes, “When I made that call, I said I’d hoped to continue writing until I turned 90, but that’s 18 months away — so I am taking Freedom 88.
“This past week has given me time to look back at not only the privilege the Herald has given me to be able to tell positive stories about business people who help make this city the wonderful place it is to live, but to reminisce over the good fortune I have had since my wife and I stepped off the train here after seven days on the ocean liner Empress of Canada, and three more days crossing this enormous country.
“That was in July 1963. Try to imagine what it was like for a young couple — and Paddy the Labrador — arriving in a city of around 200,000 after leaving London. I’ve always had a love affair with newspapers, and was thrilled to walk into The Albertan on my first Thursday here and start selling advertising the following Monday.”
