New York Times executive producer Erica Berenstein sent out the following:
I am thrilled to share the news that Havovi Cooper is joining New York Times Opinion as a senior producer of Opinion Video, where she will help shape our enterprise and vertical video journalism.
Havovi joins us after seven years at Business Insider, where she was a deputy executive producer leading the ambitious documentary series “Risky Business” that examined the human consequences of global industries. The show won several Edward R. Murrow Awards and resulted in a family being freed from modern-day slavery. Havovi was a senior producer on Business Insider’s Emmy-winning documentary “The True Cost of Electric Car Battery Minerals,” and she helped start the Insider News channel on YouTube, which won a Webby for best politics and news coverage in 2022.
As the founding chair of Business Insider’s editorial standards board, Havovi elevated journalistic standards and developed ethical reporting policies across the newsroom. In 2022, Havovi, a mentor to women journalists of color, was selected for the Poynter Leadership Academy for Women in Media.
Before Business Insider, Havovi spent 12 years at Reuters, where she built deep experience as an international producer and on-air correspondent, reporting from Venezuela, Mexico and the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Born and raised in Karachi, Havovi is fluent in Urdu, Hindi and Gujarati, and she is currently learning Italian. Havovi collects cats, sings in a rock band and is always on the hunt for the best biryani. She holds a master’s degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, where she received the Pulitzer Moore fellowship.
