Bloomberg News managing editor of global business coverage Shelly Banjo sent out the following on Thusday:
A decade is a long time in journalism years.
Today is my last day at Bloomberg and I’m so incredibly lucky to have spent the last 10 years at a place where you’re only limited by your own ambition. Thank you Mike for allowing me to be a very small part of something great – I will miss this place dearly.
I’m grateful for so many things, but it’s the people — and the many adventures — that stand out: dodging tear gas while covering the Hong Kong protests, walking a tightrope at an Indonesian selfie retreat, producing a 6-part podcast on the rise of TikTok that took me all over China and the U.S., running the New York bureau in the depths of the pandemic, and cheering my team on as we broke open an investigation into Tesla’s dangerous doors.
As I head off to my next adventure, my immense gratitude goes to the reporters and editors on the global business team, who taught me so much about elevating our journalism and willing seemingly impossible stories to life. I believe in you all so much and am proud of the award-winning work we accomplished together. I’ll be rooting for your continued success!
While it’s a fools errand to try to thank everyone who helped make Bloomberg such a special place to work, I have to thank David Shipley and Tim Obrien who first hired me as an opinion columnist in 2015 and Paul Sillitoe for bringing me to Hong Kong; Brad Stone who let me trek across China to learn where global tech is really heading; Jackie Simmons, Reto Gregori and John Micklethwait who trusted me with Bloomberg’s biggest bureau at a precarious time; Tom Giles, Mark Milian and Shawn Wen who helped me find my podcasting voice; Randy Shapiro, Lily Roos and Laura Zelenko for teaching me how to legally and ethically bulletproof ambitious journalism; Cynthia Koons, Emily Cohn, Catherine Larkin, Rick Clough, Jed Sandberg, Pratish Narayanan, Brian Bremner, Heather Harris and Caroline Gage for always pushing me to be better; Julie Alnwick, Nisha Gopalan, Angela moon, Julie Fine, stacy-marie Ishmael, Laura Nahmias, Crayton Harrison, Lindsey Rupp Ted Mann and Nabila Ahmed for many hours of listening; and Rebecca Greenfield, Jennifer Sondag and Jason Kelly for always, always having my back. Thank you.
