Reuters global enterprise editor Mike Williams sent out the following note to staff:
All,
I’m happy to report that Pete McKenzie, the 2025 Sir Harry Evans Fellow, is joining Reuters as international climate correspondent, covering the political, economic and scientific implications of the Earth’s evolving climate.
Pete joins us after a successful stint at Reuters as the Sir Harry Fellow last year, when he did a series of reports on the superpower showdown between the U.S. and China in the Pacific Islands. In Palau, he revealed an expansive influence campaign by China aimed at prying away a strategic U.S. ally. On Ebeye, a tiny island near a strategic U.S. base, he exposed the extent of a public-health crisis that is testing relations with the U.S. and could create an opening for China.
Before joining Reuters, Pete freelanced for the New York Times, Time, the Washington Post and the Economist after earning a master’s in global politics from Columbia University and a law degree from Victoria University of Wellington. Prior to starting his journalism career, he worked as a judge’s clerk in the New Zealand High Court and served as an infantry officer in the New Zealand Army Reserve.
In this new role, Pete will be based in Sydney, reporting to Peter Hirschberg. Please join me in wishing him success at Reuters.
Best,
Mike
