Bloomberg News has won the 2023 Hinrich Foundation Award for Distinguished Reporting on Trade from the National Press Foundation for a series of comprehensive reporting on a variety of trade issues — from AI advancements, Brazil choosing China over the U.S. for a factory plant and an in-depth analysis on decoupling from China.
The contributors include Shawn Donnan, Simone Preissler Iglesias, Enda Curran, Leonardo Lara, Maeva Cousin, Bryce Baschuk, Ruchi Bhatia, Laura Curtis, Jennah Haque, William Horobin, Sam Kim, Alessandra Migliaccio, Brendan Murray and Mayumi Negishi.
NPF judges praised the Bloomberg team for its “laser-sharp focus on trade issues,” applauding the story titled “War, AI and Climate Change Shake Up $32 Trillion in Global Trade” for reporting from diverse locations to highlight the “little sparks all over the world” that advancements in trade have ignited. Bloomberg sent reporters to cover “robot wranglers” in France, an Irish company called Wazp using 3D printing for IKEA’s mass production, a Namibian student able to go to the University of London because of Brexit and more.
The story The Global Economy Enters an Era of Upheaval analyzed U.N. foreign-direct investment data points to a world reorganizing into rival blocs that reflect UN votes on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The reporting won praise from the International Monetary Fund’s research department for illuminating the earliest signs of fragmentation and from NPF judges for “challenging assumptions.”
The Hinrich Foundation Award for Distinguished Reporting on Trade was created in 2019 to recognize exemplary journalism that illuminates and advances the public’s understanding of international business and trade. Previous winners include Nikkei Asia, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal.
