Bloomberg Industry names eight summer interns

Bloomberg Industry Group announced Thursday that it will have eight summer interns to its newsroom.

“Our talented intern class comes to us with a wide range of experiences from previous internships, college papers, print and online publications, and broadcast outlets,” said Cesca Antonelli, editor-in-chief of Bloomberg Industry Group. “We are excited to welcome them and are confident that they will hit the ground running and make significant contributions here.”

Bloomberg Industry Group’s 2024 news interns are:

Lilah Burke is in the master’s of journalism program at the Craig Newmark School of Journalism at CUNY. She has worked as a freelance reporter covering education and as a general assignment reporter at Inside Higher Ed. Her work has also appeared in the Guardian, Bloomberg Businessweek, The Washington Post, The Hechinger Report, and a dozen other publications.

Gabe Castro-Root is a rising senior at American University, where he studies journalism and sustainability. Castro-Root has interned at the San Francisco Chronicle, The Charlotte Observer and the Investigative Reporting Workshop. He is a member of the Society of Environmental Journalists and the D.C. Science Writers Association and is a 2024 White House Correspondents’ Association scholar.

Thomas Gleason is a junior at the University of Missouri studying documentary and photojournalism. He has interned at the Missouri Business Alert as a banking and finance reporter and most recently worked as a visual journalist for the Columbia Missourian.

Olivia Gyapong is a junior at the University of Missouri, double majoring in journalism and political science and minoring in constitutional democracy. Gyapong has worked for Brussels-based policy and politics outlet Euractiv covering global affairs and EU transportation policy. She has worked for the Arizona Republic as a Pulliam Fellow and as an intern at WAMU 88.5 and DCist. Gyapong also covered youth/K-12 education as a reporter at the Columbia Missourian.

Avani Kalra is a junior at Northwestern University, where she most recently was editor-in-chief of the student newspaper. She has covered environmental policy and breaking news for the Chicago Tribune, breaking news for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and was a general assignment intern at the Wisconsin State Journal.

Caitlin McLean will graduate this month from Georgetown University. At Georgetown, she served as editor-in-chief of The Hoya. She has interned at NBC News, USA Today, and The Hill.

Owen Racer is completing a master’s of journalism at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism with a concentration in audio and health and science reporting. After completing an undergraduate degree in economics at the University of Cincinnati, Racer contributed reporting to NPR member stations including WHYY, WWNO, and WVXU. While reporting from New Orleans, he contributed to KFF Health News, Biz New Orleans, Comstock’s Magazine, and various business journals.

Alexis Waiss will graduate this month from Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. She has done equity reporting for the Arizona Republic, election coverage for PolitiFact, and social justice and politics reporting for the Arizona PBS affiliate Cronkite News. Her work has been featured in USA Today and several of Arizona’s local outlets, including the Phoenix Business Journal, the Copper Courier, and Arizona Mirror.
