Laura Dhillon Kane, Ottawa bureau chief at Bloomberg News, sent out the following to the staff on Thursday:
Good afternoon,
We are thrilled to announce Nojoud Al Mallees is joining Bloomberg to be our new Canada economy reporter in Ottawa. Nojoud brings strong reporting chops, sharp news judgment and economic expertise to the role. She will cover the Canadian economy at a critical juncture, as US tariffs hammer strategic industries and spur the country to diversify trading relationships and spend heavily on infrastructure projects.
Nojoud most recently covered the Canadian economy for the Globe and Mail, where she broke news and wrote smart analysis of the trade war and the Carney government’s efforts to stoke growth. She has spent years covering economic statistics and the Bank of Canada, including in her previous role at The Canadian Press, and she excels at distilling complex ideas into readable, lively narratives. She also brings strong political reporting instincts — while at CP, she uncovered a document that revealed the Trudeau government had been warned its ambitious immigration targets would strain housing supply. The story helped fuel criticism of the prime minister’s migration policy, which he ultimately reversed.
Nojoud holds a master of journalism from Ryerson University and a bachelor’s degree in economics and psychology from Western University. She speaks English, French and Arabic, and also has broadcast journalism experience. Please join us in welcoming Nojoud to Bloomberg. Her first day is Oct. 13.
