Mary Schlangenstein, who has been covering airlines for Bloomberg News for the last 25 years and been with the company for 33 years, is retiring.
“There’s never a dull moment, never a lack of news and always things to learn and see, even after more than two decades,” she wrote on LinkedIn. “It’s been an honor to work with incredible people who often were generous with their time, from ramp workers and mechanics to flight crews to union leaders to corporate communications folks to managers and executives at all levels.”
Schlangenstein joined Bloomberg in March 1992 in Dallas. She previously worked for United Press International and was one of Bloomberg’s first reporters outside of New York.
She joined UPI in January 1979 and worked two years in Dallas before transferring to New Orleans in March 1981. She moved to Shreveport, Louisiana, in December 1982 to open UPI’s north Louisiana bureau and organize a stringer network for coverage of the area. She was also UPI’s Houston bureau manager.
Schlangenstein received her journalism degree in 1978 from the University of Texas-Arlington and a political science degree in 1980 from the University of Texas-Dallas.
She will officially retire after completing a project for Bloomberg Businessweek later this year.
