Baltimore biz reporter Postal dies at 82

Arthur David Postal

Arthur David Postal, the financial editor of the old Baltimore News American who had a lengthy career in business journalism, died Nov. 22 at the age of 82.

A Baltimore Sun story states, “He later covered business, including events at Bethlehem Steel, McCormick, Perdue and Luskin’s. He wrote about the sale of the Orioles baseball club in 1979 by its then owner, Jerold ‘Jerry’ Hoffberger.

“‘Dave was a good soul, a loving family man, and a deeply serious newsman in his day,’ said former Baltimore Sun columnist Michael Olesker. ‘When I joined the University of Maryland’s student newspaper, The Diamondback, 60 years ago, Dave was sports editor and was very encouraging to me. A decade later, I was happy to help him find work at The News American.

“‘Dave had a great feel for the underdog but he also had a grasp on the truth of a story,’ said Mr. Olesker. ‘I can see him now, twirling his hair and reading copy. He was a perfect fit for the News American. Reporters there tended to be characters, and certainly Dave was one of them, he had street smart and savvy.’

“He remained with the paper as business editor until its 1986 closure.”
