Phil Izzo

Wall Street Journal editor in chief Emma Tucker sent out the following on Friday:

Dear all,

Phil Izzo is joining the Managing Editor’s Office as Associate Managing Editor reporting to Liz Harris.

Phil was previously the Head of Audience Engagement, where he expanded our capabilities on newsroom data and SEO. He collaborated across newsroom, product and engineering to push us towards a more digital and audience-led Wall Street Journal. Prior to that, Phil served as Deputy Chief News Editor, helping to oversee breaking news and manage coverage.

Playing an integral role in shaping the contemporary digital Journal, Phil was the inaugural editor of our Real-Time Economics blog, ran our innovative What’s News app, was Mobile Editor and led the reimagining of our mobile app, among other senior positions. He joined the Journal in 1999 as a news assistant for the overseas copy desk.

In his new position, Phil will manage talent towards the increasing importance of world-leading digital journalism. He will also oversee the smooth functioning of our editorial team, coordinating with departments across the business to ensure the Journal’s reporters and editors have the tools and support they need to generate the trusted reporting our newsroom is known for.

Additionally, Michelle Higgins is now the newsroom talent manager in New York reporting to Phil Izzo. Previously, Michelle was a talent editor for the Managing Editor’s Office.
