Globe and Mail shuffles business beats

Gary Salewicz, the editor of Report on Business, the Globe and Mail’s business section, sent out the following:

As the Report on Business team continues its work to expand our audience and solidify our coverage in areas proven to grow subscriptions and strengthen retention, we’re excited to announce four staff moves.

Ethan Lou joins as comment editor, responsible for cultivating and developing a slate of diverse and insightful contributors to enhance our coverage. He’ll work with business and political leaders who have something to say, and sharp writers with probing and at times provocative insights on business and the economy. A columnist for our Report on Business and Opinion sections, Ethan has written longform work for Maclean’s and Toronto Life. He has worked at Reuters and the Toronto Star. Ethan is the author of two books and has been nominated for Kobo’s emerging writer prize. He has served as a visiting journalist at the University of British Columbia and is a graduate of Toronto Metropolitan University. He starts Monday, Oct. 3, reporting to Dennis Choquette.

Salmaan Farooqui joins our Investor team as a personal finance reporter alongside Erica Alini. Sal joined The Globe as our weekend reporter last December after years as a freelance contributor, and his byline has already appeared frequently as part of our personal finance coverage. As a freelancer, he wrote on everything from navigating student loans to choosing travel insurance to the most cost-friendly outdoor activities (spoiler: It’s disc golf). His work has also appeared in The Guardian, Canadian Press, Toronto Star and BBC World News. He will transition from his weekend role over the coming weeks. He will report to James Cowan.

James Bradshaw is taking on a new challenge as our institutional investing reporter, covering Canada’s largest investors including pension plans and private equity firms such as Brookfield Asset Management. James has been Canada’s top banking reporter for nearly six years, most recently leading coverage on important issues such as the financial-sector fallout from COVID-19, tensions between Ottawa and Bay Street, and the freezing of bank accounts under the Emergencies Act. He has built relationships with CEOs and senior bankers that helped him frame the strategic challenges facing banks, break news about executive changes and regulatory issues, and reveal behind-the-scenes dynamics among the banks and their leaders. James joined The Globe in 2007, covering beats for the national desk as well as the arts section before joining ROB. From 2014 to 2017 he covered media in a period of upheaval and consolidation (including the previous revolt at Bell Media). James has won a SABEW Best in Business Award and the Edward Goff Penny Prize for young journalists; he has also been nominated for a National Newspaper Award. In his new role, he will continue to report to Janet McFarland. We will be actively seeking a replacement for James on the banking beat.

David Milstead is increasing his focus on areas outside of institutional investing, where he has unique skills to leverage across the newsroom. David will continue to be our lead expert on corporate governance matters – including managing our annual Board Games project – and will devote part of his time to executive compensation issues. He will continue to bring his expertise on accounting and data analysis to his column, which has become a must-read for many investors looking for challenging views on companies’ decisions. David will continue to bring that watchdog mindset to daily stories and to many of our biggest projects to help create solid, fact-driven journalism that spurs reform. David will continue to be a key contact for others in our newsroom who are seeking help with compensation, accounting and investing issues, making him a newsroom-wide resource for other journalists. This year, he won a National Newspaper Award and was a finalist for another, in both cases contributing financial expertise to the stories entered. While David joined the Globe as a full-time reporter in 2018, his breadth of expertise has been honed over nearly three decades as a business journalist, including nine years as regular freelance contributor to the Globe from 2009 until 2018. Prior to that, he worked as finance editor at Denver’s Rocky Mountain News, where he won a total of nine individual and joint awards from SABEW, and as a reporter at The Wall Street Journal. He will continue reporting to Janet McFarland.
