WNYC’s Schachter joins New Hampshire Public Radio as CEO

Jim Schachter

Jim Schachter will be joining New Hampshire Public Radio as the new President and Chief Executive Officer effective Oct. 15.

Schachter will be responsible for crafting and executing a vision for NHPR which will maintain its journalistic excellence and stay true to its mission of ‘expanding minds, sparking connections, and building stronger communities.’

Previously, Jim had been employed by WNYC, the largest public radio station in New York. There, he served as President for seven years and managed a staff of 120 people. During his time with the WNYC, the reporting prompted federal, state and local investigations. Additionally, WNYC also earned numerous prestigious honors in journalism including Peabody, National Edward R. Murrow and Third Coast to name a few. His other achievements included diversity efforts in staff and on-air positions and the launch of national call-in programs.

Schachter has also spent 17 years at the New York Times working as a senior editor in the business and culture departments. Later, he rose to the position of associate managing editor. He also worked with the Los Angeles Times for 10 years.

Peter Burger, chair of NHPR board said, “His experience and perspective reporting from some of our nation’s great newsrooms and managing high-performing teams will be an asset as we work to build upon NHPR’s tradition of excellence, deep community engagement and value to listeners.”

“The people of New Hampshire are fortunate that NHPR pairs ambition with heart, creativity with competence, and accountability with responsibility. I’m honored to have the great opportunity to be a steward of those principles.”, added Schachter.

He first started his career in journalism at the Jacksonville Journal after graduating from Columbia University, New York.

Schachter and his wife Pam have four adult children. The family has spent a lot of time in the Granite State for vacations and holidays and look forward to exploring the area further.
