WaPo hires McDaniel, Javaid as general assignment reporters

Justine McDaniel

Justine McDaniel has joined The Washington Post’s general assignment desk to cover breaking news and write of-the-moment features. McDaniel was a general assignment news reporter at the Philadelphia Inquirer, where she covered the pandemic.

Before that, she worked on the policy and solutions team, based in the regional bureau, where she covered general news and state politics, environmental contamination, transportation and other stories.

She was a senior editor of Cake Central Magazine in Seattle and wrote for various news and arts publications on the West Coast. Her work has earned awards from the Keystone State Press Association, Society of Professional Journalists Keystone Spotlight and Associated Press.

McDaniel graduated from the University of Puget Sound and has a master’s degree from the University of Maryland.

Maham Javaid

We are pleased to announce that Maham Javaid is joining The Post’s General Assignment desk, where she will cover breaking news and write of-the-moment features.

Maham comes to GA from the New York Times, where she spent part of 2022 covering the Ukraine war and other news for the Live Desk. Maham, a 2022 International Women’s Media Foundation Elizabeth Neuffer Fellow, wrote opinion for the Boston Globe and at MIT researched how women in South Asia use and are influenced by TikTok as part of the fellowship.

Maham also founded and edited Soch Writing, a news magazine in Karachi, Pakistan, and edited the News on Sunday in Lahore. She was the Human Rights Watch 2019-2020 Finberg Fellow, spending that time investigating migrant workers’ rights in Qatar. She has also studied at NYU, has won awards for fiction writing and investigative reporting, and speaks English, Urdu, Punjabi and Hindi.
