The Washington Post has tapped New York Times’s Paulina Villegas Vargas to join the general assignment news desk covering breaking news and enterprise stories.
At the Times, Vargas was working in the Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean bureau, where she has reported on immigration, regional politics and general news since 2013.
Before joining the Times, Vargas was an investigative political reporter for Mexico’s Reporte Indigo.
Vargas gained her experience in documentary-style film and video production when working on The Weekly. She was also part of a series that won a George Polk Award for international reporting.
In her new role, Vargas will be based in Washington when normal operations resume. For now, she will begin virtually on August 31.
Vargas earned her Master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University.
