Justin Smith, former CEO Bloomberg Media, and Ben Smith, a former media columnist at The New York Times have named their new media startup Semafor.

Justin Smith said that he and his partner had selected the name “that is the same word in 25 or 35 different languages,” which reflects the company’s global ambitions. “It is very intentionally going to be able to live in Asia or Europe or the Middle East or America,” he added.
