The following excerpt was sent out from The New York Times:

The Athletic will be delivering extended, in-depth coverage and analysis of two of the biggest soccer teams in the world, across live match blogs and a range of formats from insightful long reads and breaking news, to video and podcasts, with a new team of six writers and editors.

The writers, based in Spain, will include Mario Cortegana who has joined the new team to cover Real Madrid. A sports journalist with more than 10 years of experience, Mario has broken some of the biggest news stories in Spanish media. Journalist Guillermo Rai will also join the Real Madrid reporting team, having worked as London Correspondent at Diario AS and Cadena SER.

The Athletic is also expanding the team dedicated to coverage of Barcelona to include Pol Ballús, who moves into the role, having previously covered Manchester City for The Athletic; and Laia Cervelló Herrero, a Catalan native who brings a decade of experience to the role, having reported on the club for Diario Sport after spending four years at BeIN SPORTS Spain and GOLTV. Journalist Dermot Corrigan, who has been with The Athletic for the past three years, will continue to work across the biggest stories in Spanish football.

The new team will be led by editors Patrick Jennings, who joins The Athletic after nine years at the BBC, and Tomás Hill López Menchero, who arrives from ESPN.
