The San Francisco Chronicle is proud to welcome its 2023 class of summer interns. These standout students will work on big stories across departments and coverage areas.
Let’s meet the journalists and their assignments:

Originally from Albuquerque, N.M., Berlin is a recent graduate of San Francisco State University with a bachelor’s degree in print and online journalism. While at S.F. State, they contributed as online editor at the university paper for two semesters and spent a semester at the Danish School of Media & Journalism reporting on European crisis initiatives during the invasion of Ukraine.
Matthew Brown is a rising senior at UC Berkeley, where he studies political science with a minor in public policy, and he will be one of this year’s multiplatform editing interns under the Dow Jones News Fund journalism fellowship. Amaya Edwards is a recent graduate of the journalism program at S.F. State. She was recently a photo intern at the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Her pitch for a documentary photo story about Black Doulas and Black Maternal Justice earned her the Fran Ortiz Grant, which she is still working on.

She previously worked at the Daily Northwestern, where she served as the summer editor-in-chief, print managing editor and campus editor. As a reporter, she has primarily focused on student activism and labor rights, with additional reporting on local city politics. This summer, Funk is working as a multiplatform editing intern through the Dow Jones News Fund.
