POLITICO planted its flag in the Empire State a decade ago, building an operation that still delivers class-leading political and policy coverage in Albany and New York City. Since then, our reporters and editors in the state have taken on ever-more-important roles in our newsroom, routinely delivering must-read stories of national consequence and contributing to our broader coverage of American politics.
We want to make sure our editorial offerings in New York reflect that important place the state has in our coverage — and our important place in New York. To that end, we’re announcing several exciting moves designed to bolster our presence in the state:
- This morning, we launched a new hub page for New York. Find it at politico.com/newyork. Like we’ve done in California, where we launched a similar landing page last year, we’ll use this space to feature our best New York journalism and share all the latest big political and policy news as it happens.
- We also just published a revamped New York Playbook, with a refreshed look and structure that matches the increasingly ambitious work of the three Playbook writers we hired last year: Jeff Coltin, Emily Ngo and Nick Reisman. The trio will continue to craft a scoopy, urgent morning briefing that will drive the conversation among knowledgeable New Yorkers.
- This afternoon, we’ll resume publishing New York Playbook PM. Traditionally a seasonal offering, this newsletter will now run throughout the year. New York Playbook PM will also now obsess over everything and anything Albany, giving those who care about what happens in the state Capitol — that is, most of our loyal New York readers — a valuable daily resource.
Beyond the afternoon Playbook, we’re putting even more focus on Albany, which is still going through generational change more than two years after Andrew Cuomo’s resignation. We want to offer professional subscribers and our consumer audience the smartest, newsiest reporting on Gov. Kathy Hochul, the Legislature, state agencies and the power players shaping the agenda.
In support of that effort, we’re also pleased to announce New York City intern Jason Beeferman will fill a new position based in Albany, reporting to New York Editor Joe Spector. We’re giving Jason a mandate to deliver daily, up-to-the-minute reporting on action in the Capitol. He’ll do everything from staking out legislative meetings to digging deeply into the inner working of the Hochul administration. And he’ll play a leading role in producing New York Playbook PM.
Jason started with us in September and quickly proved himself to be one of the most capable interns we’ve had in New York. He’s delivered strong enterprise stories for the homepage and scoops that drove the news cycle in the city. It was an obvious move to keep him on as a full-time reporter. Jason previously covered local government for The Dallas Morning News and state government for The Texas Tribune. He also cut his teeth at the Chicago Sun-Times and The New York Post. He grew up on Long Island and holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in journalism from Northwestern University. He’ll move to Albany this winter.
