The following excerpt was sent out from The New York Times’ Asia leadership team:
When we were looking for our next night editor and weekend editor for the Asia team, we didn’t need to look far. The talent was right here in Seoul: Farah Fleurima and Kathleen Flynn.
Farah, who came to The Times last year, has already made her mark, with a deft touch on the homepage and critical eye for stories, including a recent one on Hollywood’s body standards and a feature on the director Gina Prince-Bythewood.
Farah started her journalism career on the copy desk at a suburban offshoot of The Dallas Morning News, eventually making the leap to the features copy desk of the metropolitan newspaper. After stints at The Ann Arbor News and The Detroit News, she returned to Dallas as one of the newspaper’s copy chiefs.
She also spent several years freelancing for magazines, running her own dining and travel blog, as well as launching the Zagat dining blog in Dallas. Six years ago, she moved to Korea to teach English, leading preschool through college-level classes. Farah earned a bachelor’s in English from the University of North Texas and a master’s degree in English from Eastern Michigan University, respectively.
It’s hard to believe that Kathleen has been in Seoul for only a year. We can’t imagine the hub without her.
“Looking at the day’s sked and seeing Kathleen’s name on it is like a tonic,” said Dave Moll, the international news editor for Asia. “The next best thing to a reporter who files near-perfect copy is an editor like her who you can ask to do something and know that’s the last time you’ll have to think about it, because it’ll get done flawlessly.”
Kathleen can handle pretty much anything that comes her way. It’s training she got working on a variety of desks at The Times, where she started in 2005 in Metro. She joined the International/National copy desk just in time for the Arab Spring and the Fukushima disaster. She was an editor at The Upshot from its inception in 2014, until she moved to Seoul.
This is Kathleen’s second tour in Asia. After graduating from Barnard College, she spent two years in Hong Kong teaching English to middle schoolers. The overseas experience sparked her interest in journalism. When she returned home to the United States, she studied journalism at the University of North Carolina, and then worked at The Raleigh News & Observer on the main copy desk and the business desk.
Please join us in congratulating Farah and Kathleen.
