The following excerpt was sent out from The New York Times’ Carole Landry and Adam Pasick:
Matthew Cullen is our new lead writer for the Evening Briefing, the weekday newsletter.
He brings a sharp eye for news and an appreciation for the out-of-the-ordinary stories that make us shine.
Matt stepped in as a temporary writer for the Evening Briefing eight months ago. He has also helped write the Asia-Pacific Morning Briefing and worked on the weekly News Quiz — especially those clever and fiendishly difficult sports questions.
Matt came to The Times in 2021, working on both the Politics and Newsletters desks as a news assistant. After joining Newsletters full time in early 2022, he worked closely with The Morning team to help produce its daily newsletter. During the past year, Matt has written for The Morning about wildfires, the Supreme Court, travel headaches and baseball.
Justin Porter is joining Newsletters as a senior editor, working on briefings and new pop-up newsletters.
Justin has a deep understanding of The Times, cultivated over more than 20 years. He says he has basically grown up in the newsroom, starting in the mailroom when he was 19 and then working as a news assistant for several desks before settling into stints on International, the News desk, the print front page and the digital home page.
For the last few years, he’s been focused on our news alert and targeted email programs — distilling even the most complex articles down to an elegant 145 characters or less — and most recently completed an embed as an editor with Special Sections.
