NY Times adds to Afghan bureau

The New York Times has appointed Thomas Gibbons-Neff Kabul bureau chief and Christina Goldbaum a correspondent in Afghanistan.

Both will work closely with David Zucchino, a correspondent who will continue to rotate through Kabul with extended visits.

Gibbons-Neff joined The Times in 2017 in the Washington bureau, covering the Pentagon. He headed to Kabul in 2020. Previously, he has also worked as a reporter at The Washington Post.

Goldbaum joined The Times in 2018 and has covered immigration and transportation on the Metro desk, before establishing herself in Kabul. Her bylines have appeared in The New York Times, Foreign Policy Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, The Daily Beast, The Economist, USA Today, Vice, IRIN News, the Christian Science Monitor, and Quartz, among others.

She received the the 2018 Livingston Award in International Reporting, the 2018 National Press Club’s Edwin M. Hood Award for Diplomatic Correspondence-Print, and the 2018 Frontline Club Print Award.
