NPR has opened a Ukraine bureau in Kyiv that will be helmed by Joanna Kakissis. Kakissis began reporting in Ukraine shortly before Russia’s invasion.

“NPR’s coverage of the conflict is unparalleled, due to the extraordinary work of dozens of NPR staff who have volunteered to travel to Ukraine to report on and support our uncompromising look at the facts on the ground,” said NPR’s chief international editor Didi Schanche. “Having Joanna at our bureau in Kyiv will provide additional consistency and depth to our reporting.”

Kakissis has been with NPR since 2012. She freelanced for Time, Foreign Policy, The Financial Times Magazine, The Boston Globe, McClatchy Newspapers and The Caravan.

She also wrote for The (Raleigh) News & Observer. Kakissis has a M.A. in journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
