The Washington Post has promoted Mary Jo Murphy to deputy editor on the democracy team. Recently, she was an editor for Outlook, a role she took on when she joined the Post in 2018.
As per the Post:
“Mary Jo will oversee a portfolio centering on the Fact Checker, a signature Washington Post franchise that holds the powerful to account and exposes the origins of disinformation. She will also help shepherd explanatory pieces that assist our readers in understanding the mechanics of how American democracy works — or should work.”
Previously, she worked at The New York Times for 23 years, where she held various roles, including deputy media editor and assigning editor for the Week in Review ideas section.
Murphy began her career as a reporter at the Charlottesville Daily Progress and is a veteran of all three of New York’s major tabloids.
Murphy received a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Virginia and a master’s from Columbia Journalism School.
