Laura Smith has joined Departures as a deputy editor. She comes from California Magazine, where she was deputy editor, and recently served as executive editor.
Previously, she was a writer, editor and managing editor at San Francisco-based history magazine Timeline. She was a fellow at Mother Jones.
Her work has been published in The New York Times, The Guardian, The Paris Review, The Atlantic and Slate.
Smith has a B.A. from the University of Virginia and a M.A. from New York University.
