The American Journalism Project is investing $900,000 in VTDigger’s business operations to help transform the business and use it as a model for nonprofit news nationally.

The investment will be injected into the company over a span of 3 years.

“VTDigger has an unprecedented opportunity to increase our news impact,” VTDigger editor Anne Galloway said. “Over the past decade, market forces have decimated the news industry. As a result, our democracy is at risk. We are grateful for the opportunity to strengthen our model and share the lessons we have learned over the years — many of them the hard way– with our peers across the country.”

With this investment, VTDigger will be able to expand as AJP will support the hire of new tech and business positions. Also, the organization will have the opportunity to learn from innovative nonprofit journalism outlets across the country.

VTDigger will also have the chance of finding new ways of supporting local media and to contribute to a growing national movement which regards journalism as a public good that should be supported in every way.
